Today I feel like a time traveler. One song at a time.
I was listening to Toto when I came upon the daily prompt, perfect timing? Yes, I think so. Who doesn’t bless the rain down in Africa and take the time to do the things you never have? Rosanna by Toto, cool fact, did you know that the dancer is Penny from Dirty Dancing? I heard tell that Patrick Swayze was one of the male dancers but never did see him. How about that mustache on the singer?
It takes me back to high school, the struggles of a teenager, because you know, not knowing what to wear tomorrow to school could have ended my life. Not really, back then the 80s ruled and so long as your outfit resembled some artist, you were thought to be cool. I do remember Madonna outfits were top choice, there was not a single girl who did not attempt to pay homage to the blonde era, remember those skin-tight outfits, walking was a struggle, now imagine trying to climb an infinite amount of stairs to get to class on time.
As I sit here and type, the next song playing is “Don’t you (forget about me) by Simple Minds, can you guess where that will lead? The Breakfast Club of course! Molly Ringwald anyone, or should I say, Clair. Every girl I knew had a crush on Judd or Emilio. Though I never decorated my drawings with dandruff, I imagine it would have looked cool! Who knew the nerd of the bunch was gonna grow up to be a jock (Johnny be Good). Too bad detention was never this interesting in real life, or least not that I ever heard from others who actually were sent to detention. It was more like stuck in a classroom either working on a package of worksheets or sitting there bored out of your mind hating your friends who were actually out there somewhere having fun, shopping, loitering malls and such.
Take on me by Aha, now that is one trip of a video, how many comic books didn’t I read wishing to be pulled in by some hunk of a guy and then chased by a random guy holding a wrench? It was an adventure within an adventure.
Steve Perry, oh now there is a crush to crush all crushes, why I remember making out wedding invitations to the union of Steve and I, I think perhaps I should have sent him one as well, maybe then he would have showed up even if it were to let me down easy! I wanted to be his “Oh Sherrie” and have him be “Faithfully” mine. There did come the day when I had to face facts and knew we had to go our “Separate Ways” just as long as he always knew that I would forever and still do wait for him with “Open Arms”. Okay, I’ll stop myself because I could just go on, but it is his fault when he told me to “Don’t Stop Believin”.
Air Supply’s All Out of Love, wow, this playlist is just leading me to heartbreak all over again. They’re asking what I would say if he called on me now and say that he can’t hold on. Well, I’d be there in a second to rescue him, of course. What am I thinking of, well about love for sure, what are we without it? These were magicians for me as well, who else did you know that was Making Love Out of Nothing At All?
Fleetwood Mac, Gypsy, I used to decorate my room with lace and paper flowers but never did go back to the gypsy that I was, hmm and yeah, lightning did strike maybe once or maybe twice. The Rumours Album was just great.
So last but not least on my list playing at the moment is Jim Croce, 1973 Time in A Bottle. So simple yet such great sentiment. If that is too slow for your mood then give Bad Bad Leroy Brown a chance! I’m ending it here not because the music stopped, but because I could write forever and well, we all have our own favorites that send us to another place and time.
Music truly is what moves my soul, there really is a song for every mood and every occasion. What is a day without music? let us never find out.
Thank you so much for this post! I used to listen to much of the same music as you. And A-ha, you have no idea what a big deal they were in Norway (they are Norwegian). Last year they confirmed that they were reunited, but I havent heard anythything from them since. Let us hope they are in studio recording a new album 🙂

Olive Ole, indeed that would be so great! I always wondered why they went their separate ways.

I loved this post – thank you for sharing some of your memories with us!
For what it’s worth? When I think of Breakfast Club, I think of my 40-something (maybe 30s?) Grade 10 drama teacher acting out the Bender role in front of the class – our school did it as a play in the early-1990s 🙂

Louise, that would make for a great video to still have and show off from time to time 😉 Sounds like you had a fun teacher. Thanks for the read, have a wonderful week.
